From Senneh, now known as Sanandaj, the capital of Iran's Kurdistan Province, this square carpet comes from a region with a long tradition of Kurdish weaving. Sanandaj was an important regional centre of trade, with carpets and wool from surrounding villages brought into the city.
At the centre of this piece is an unusually unbalanced medallion, with subtle changes in the drawing that give the design a sense of movement. In handmade carpets, these variations can sometimes reflect the individual hand of the weaver. Or, in some cases, a change in weaver partway through the piece
